The African Grey parrot belongs to the Psittacus genus. Although there seems to be some controversy, the general consensus seems to be that there are two subspecies. The Congo African grey parrot has the scientific name of Psittacus erithacus erithacus and the Timneh African grey parrot is called Psittacus erithacus timneh.

It would seem that African greys have been kept as pets for thousands of years. The hieroglyphic scripts of the Egyptians clearly depict pet parrots. Parrots were also kept by the ancient Greeks and Romans. More recently, King Henry VIII had an African grey as a pet.

The African grey is a native of West and Central Africa. It is found in primary and secondary rainforest.

Of the two species, the Congo African grey parrot is the larger. Congo African grey parrots have light grey plumage. The tails are a cherry red and the beak is black. They are about 33cm long. The Timneh African grey parrot is smaller. The plumage is darker and the tail is a dark maroon. The upper mandible or beak is a light, horn-colour.

African greys may bond with one person if they are not socialised regularly with others. They can be timid with strangers. Being very intelligent birds they need constant stimulation and diversion if they are not to get bored. Bored birds get into mischief or develop bad habits so rotate their toys from time to time. African greys are quick to learn and mimic repetitive electronic sounds such as video games and the ring of a telephone. Even the sound of a tap dripping will be learnt and added to their repertoire.

As aviary birds, the African grey is affectionate and intelligent. As already stated, they are good mimics. However they can be unpredictable and it is best to keep them away from small children. The bite is painful and their claws can also cause nasty scratches.

If not hand-reared, they take quite some time to become tame. All aviary parrots need a lot of attention. Because this species is so intelligent, they need at least three hours a day out of their cage. If they are not kept stimulated and occupied, they are liable to start feather-picking.

African Grey Parrot breeding can be influenced by the size and type of nest box that the parents were reared in. Offer a choice of boxes and/or logs in a variety of sizes and let the birds choose. African Greys nest from August to February. Place the nest in a shaded area and high in the aviary but not so close to the roof that it becomes too hot. The box or log needs to have a length and depth of 50 to 60cm. Place the nest at any angle from 45o through to almost vertical. In the wild, the nest will have a natural lining of wood chips and perhaps rotted vegetation.

Once you get an assignment, finish it on time and use your momentum to get other work. If you did not have to sell all the rights, try to reprint the piece in a non-competing market after about six months. This way, you can get paid two, three, or four times for the same work. Always sell as few rights as possible, but don’t worry about it too much when you’re just starting out.

A magazine article doesn’t have a certain structure, like a news item and its upside-down pyramid. But there is also some work to do.

• Once a topic is chosen, and you’ve listed all possible sources, it’s time to use them.
• People can also be sources. Arrange appointments with those who interest you, and prepare questions concerning your article. Don’t forget to take notes.
• Write a heading that is both informative and catchy.
• Create a motivating topic sentence;
• Show, not tell – this is the golden rule of all writers;
• Stay firmly on your writing goal and don’t get carried away from your researches and topic while writing;
• No matter how narrow, your topic still has to have several subtopics that you will develop in your body paragraphs;
• Think about illustrations. Usually, professional photos are obtained from agencies such as AP. But the subscription costs quite a lot. At the same time, illustrations are a good way to get attention. So, if you are writing about dog parks, why not take a camera and go there for some original pictures?
• Inexperienced writers sometimes feel tired after writing few paragraphs. This is not the proper time for challenges. Put your article aside, and have some rest. You can not only prevent yourself from making a poor job just to get rid of it, but come up with a fresh look on a specific issue you are writing about.

Terry Whalin shared the basics of magazine writing that would be very helpful to individuals aiming a career magazine writing. Here’s some of the necessary wisdom he shared in magazine writing:

Getting over the Hump
Ideas for magazine articles are everywhere and the places to write are just as plentiful. Maybe you have an interesting personal experience story that you can capture? Or if you don’t have any material from your own experience to write about, consider interviewing some interesting people around you and writing their story for publication.

The first question to ask is: who is my audience? What publication will use this article? The possibilities are end-less: adult, women, men, children, teenagers, or youth. Are they in a specialized occupation? Are they a certain age? The important thing is to be sure to target a specific audience.

Every writer meets with rejection and projects which are never published. In fact, I have files of material which has circulated and never been published. I caution you that rejection and unpublished articles is a part of the writer’s life and the road to consistent publication.

Increase Your Publications Odds
The bulk of my magazine writing is done on assignment. How do you get an assignment? Which magazines do you read on a consistent basis? Your familiarity with these publications and the types of articles that they publish, gives you some needed background.  Pull out the magazines that come into your home. Organize them with several months from the same publication. Then study the contents. What types of articles do they publish? How-to articles? Personal Experience?

After you have studied the publications, then write the publication for their writers guidelines. Almost every magazine has guidelines for their author. After reading through the guidelines, you will have some additional information. Does the publication accept query letters or prefer full manuscripts? Some magazines have a query only system. This means that you have to write a query letter and get a letter of request from the editor, before sending the full manuscript.

After Deciding Your Topic
You’ve decided what publication and what type of article you are going to write. What next? Research. One word of caution about research. Make sure you have a specific ending to your research. Some writers spend huge amounts of time in research and never sit down and write the article. How will you collect the information for your article? Will it come from your personal experience? Will you need some stories from other people? Will it involve library research for statistics? At your local library, make friends with the local librarians. They are a gold mine of information and resources.

After the Research
If you’ve written a query letter, then you’ve already written the opening for your article. Otherwise, the first step in the writing is to create a motivating opening story. The key phrase is to make it motivating. The opening has to propel the reader into the rest of the article so they can’t stop reading.

After writing the opening for the article, how do you continue? If you’ve done your research for the article, you will not write 2,000 words for a publication that only takes 500 word articles. So you will have a target length for your article. This word count helps give some definition to your plan.

Also if you’ve done your research, you’ve thought about the article and focused it. Can you summarize the point of the article into a single sentence? Complete the sentence: My article is about _____. After you’ve written this sentence, never wander away from this goal. Sometimes in articles, I saw at Decision, the author would begin well then wander around and finally conclude. The articles lacked focus and the sentence statement will help you keep the article on track.

Also be realistic with yourself and your writing life. Can you only write for thirty minutes a day or maybe it is only ten minutes? Are you motivated to write the entire article in one session? Possibly you write only one point from your outline during a session. Whatever your writing goal, the point is to write consistently and keep moving the article toward completion.

After you’ve written the article, put it away for a period of time. If you are on a tight deadline, that might involve eating lunch and then returning to it. If you have the time, it might involve several days or a week. When you return to your article, read it out loud. The ear is less forgiving than the eye. Reading it out loud, will point out areas for you to revise and rewrite.

Good writing is rewriting
Here are some questions to consider: Does it make sense? Are there areas that are missing? Can you tell some of the stories with more detail and emotion? Is the article focused and targeted for the assigned publication? How about the ending? As a reader, how do you feel about it? Try to look at your writing through objective and impersonal eyes. Consider the purpose of your article. Was it to motivate readers to action? Did it achieve its purpose?

Sweep through the article and check it for spelling and grammar mistakes. You’d be amazed to know how many articles are submitted for publication with typing errors and simple grammatical mistakes. As a writer, you want to present the best article possible. Give it an additional check.

If you have the opportunity, you might want to allow a friend or a fellow writer to read your article and give you feedback. One caution about this process. Ultimately you are in charge of the contents of the article that you will submit. Don’t soak up criticism like a sponge but consider each comment. Does it have validity? If so, change it and if not, ignore it.

The final step is to submit your material to a publication. In your cover letter to the publication, explain your familiarity with the magazine. If you’ve been taking it for years and faithfully reading it, say so. Don’t exaggerate but this familiarity shows your professional stance. Also express your willingness to make changes in the direction and make revision. Maybe an editor will like your opening illustration but have a completely different direction for the article. If you’ve expressed willingness to revise, you will have an opportunity for publication. If you’ve said, I wrote it and this is it, then you’ll miss that opportunity. The professional stance is to show flexibility to the direction from an editor.

You love to find them in your mailbox and can’t wait to find time to yourself to read them. There are myriad to choose from in every genre and you hate to throw them away and lose all that valuable information. You’re going to have to learn how to organize all of your magazines.

First, determine which magazines you want to continue. You haven’t enjoyed every magazine you subscribe to as much as you originally thought. When renewal time comes around, think about how much of your time you actually spent reading them, and if the information contained therein was valuable to you. Begin your organization process by weeding out those magazines you haven’t really read.

Second, utilize baskets for your monthly reading. As magazines come in the mail, store them in wicker baskets until you’re ready to read them. If you put them all in one place, you have the month’s current reading at your fingertips and can easily move the magazines from room to room.

Third, buy yourself a binder and get ripping. Just because there are a few articles in every issue that you’d like to keep, doesn’t mean you have to store the whole magazine. Go to an office-supply store and purchase any size three-ring binder that works for you, tear out those pages that interest you and file them away for future reference. You can either keep all of your articles in one binder separated by dividers and labeled, or keep a smaller binder for each category and label the binders.

Fourth, keep your magazines current. Once you’ve gone through all the old issues, you’re ready to begin fresh. Promise yourself that you won’t let the magazines collect month after month again and that you’ll keep only that month’s issue until the new one comes in the mail. Before the new one arrives, set aside 15 minutes to take out the articles you want to keep and file them.

Fifth, pare down on the catalogs, too. Catalogs tend to accumulate at least as much as magazines. People usually keep them with the intention of going back to them later to buy gifts for relatives and friends. Make a separate binder for intended purchases, but be sure to keep the cover page with the page on which the item appears. The cover pages of catalogs have your customer number that you need for Internet and phone purchases.

Sixth, look for binders and files for whole issues. With some magazines, you want to keep the whole issue rather than tear out specific pages–for example, specialty magazines that assist you with your career or hobbies. In this case, you can find magazine storage binders that hold the magazine in place with rods or posts that let you flip through the pages. There are also upright file magazine holders that come in cardboard, plastic or metal that you can keep on a bookshelf with labels to identify their contents.

A study conducted by Dynamic Logic found that magazine advertising remains effective in influencing consumer behavior and plays an important role in the marketing mix. When it comes to advertising effectiveness, magazine advertising remains especially effective in enhancing consumers’ impressions of the product and their intent to purchase that product. The study found that adding magazines to a TV and internet advertising campaign significantly boosts the success of the campaign, and in some key areas the contribution of magazines outweighed that of TV. The study analyzed 32 cross-media campaigns from 10 different types of companies, including consumer goods, automotive, electronics, apparel and financial services.

In this study, the researchers found that the three different media worked best when used together. Both online advertising and magazines added significantly to the impact of the advertising when used along with TV. Further, each media contributed in a different way. The different media are working most strongly at different points in the purchase process. The results confirm the strengths of all the media working together in a way that we hadn’t seen before. TV worked strongly in generating brand and advertising awareness. In those categories the other two media built strongly on the initial impact of TV. For instance, in terms of brand awareness, TV added 7.6 percentage points to the original percentage of people who were aware of the brand. The internet added another 3.7 points to the level of awareness. Finally magazines added another 5.7 percentage points. In terms of advertising awareness, TV provided a bump of 9.8 percentage points. The internet, which performed strongest in the same categories as TV, added another 4.4 points. Surprisingly, magazines also performed strongly in building advertising awareness, adding 8.3 points.

Do you have stacks of old magazines piled up in your house? Each month and each year the pile just gets taller and taller, but you do not exactly know what to do with them so you just leave them in a corner of your home, in the attic, basement, garage or any other storage place in the house. Others would throw them away, but that’s just not a great thing to do. We can reuse old magazines, and even help save the environment from recycling them instead of throwing them as garbage.

Remember the Quentin Tarantino movie about a day in the life of hit men, a wife of a gangster, a boxer, a pair of young lovers which all collectively are related to crime? Add to that the unforgettable dance scene of Uma Thurman and John Travolta. The movie even earned Tarantino an Oscar for Best Screenplay and was included in American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Movies. That critically-acclaimed movie, Pulp Fiction, was actually a homage to the pulp magazine Black Mask, which represents the chaotic, violent, law-breaking character of pulp magazines. The movie actually introduced ‘pulp fiction’ to people unacquainted with the phrase, since pulp magazines and ‘the pulp’ era ended during the ‘50s.

Pulp magazines, pulp fiction, or ‘the pulps’ were cheap fiction magazines commonly published from the 1920s through the 1950s. The term ‘pulp’ was derived from the breakable, high-acid wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. The magazines contain explicit violence and loud, striking cover illustrations. Some well-known characters of pulp fiction, also known as ‘hero pulps’ include Doc Savage, The Shadow and the Phantom Detective. Other regular pulp fiction characters include Buck Rogers, Captain Future, Nick Carter, Secret Agent X, Conan the Barbarian, Flash Gordon, Tarzan, The Avenger, The Spider and Zorro, among others.

Pulp magazines were at the summit of their popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, but during the 1950s, there was a decline due to the rising expenses and the serious competition from television, comic books and paperback novels, until the primary distributor of pulp magazines went bankrupt which marked the end of the ‘pulp era.’

But during the onset of the 21st century, numerous minor independent publishers issued magazines in the custom of the pulp magazines of the first part of twentieth century. One example is McSweeney’s Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales, which is a compilation of “pulp fiction” stories written by some recent well-known authors such as Stephen King, Nick Hornby, Aimee Bender, and Dave Eggers.

While reading about literature magazines, I came across the phrase “vanity press.” Curious, I did some research about the term and I came up with useful information about vanity press.

It was noted that Johnathon Clifford coined the term in 1959, which means a printer of books would claim the title of a publisher and charges the writer a fee in return for publishing the writer’s books. If the common publication is intended to the general public and earns its income from the reading public, vanity press earns from the authors and writers themselves. A vanity press normally allows to produce a published copy of an author’s creation if the writer would agree to shell out money for printing and binding to take place, where these fees usually becomes the vanity press’s profits, unlike commercial publishers where their profits come from the sales of the published material.

I’ve found out that the term “vanity press” is actually considered derogatory, since it implies that a writer or author uses the service out of vanity, with possible lack of success in the market as compared to having it published from commercial publishers, which follows policies and standard procedures to make sure of such success of the work in the market. There are even confirmed vanity presses as scams, which ask for a large fee from the author in return of fame and fortune.

On example of vanity press in fiction is Umberto Eco’s novel Foucault’s Pendulum. It talks about the inside mechanism of a vanity press functioning as a venture on the side of a more mainstream publisher, to drive out personal thoughts on the occult that cannot be published. The major publisher is managed by Signor Garamond, named for a well-known sixteenth century printer, while the vanity press is named after another prominent sixteenth century painter, ‘Manutius.’

Now I can say, in the world of publishers and publications, I have learned something new, that is, vanity press.

There was a time when I went to pick up a friend in her house for an event we’ll be attending. My friend here, happens to move in super slow motion like her clock ticks a second slower than the normal. So an hour would be two hours for her, and so on. I went to her house and she wasn’t prepared yet, so I sat back at their inviting couch to wait. Fortunately, they’re a family of magazine readers so there’s variety. I scoured first her girly mags and copies of magazines full of showbiz bits plus plenty of Hollywood posts and paparazzi shots. Looking at showbiz magazines is always amusing. Who wouldn’t get entertained to see stars strutting their stuff and these magazines throwing away gossip treats as sensationalized as ever? I ended after one copy, to keep me from getting smothered with all the tittle-tattles. That time, she just finished her bathroom ritual. So ok, she’s on to the longer part.

There were some news magazines in another rack and plenty of back copies of circulation magazines so I took one to read. Her mom is a long-time subscriber so there were piles. I was able to read a few feature stories and got laughs from humor sections and short article fillers. Then I saw a trivia section called Facts of Life in a copy. Trivia fan as I am, what I did was open all the copies and turn the page to that section, then fed myself with interesting facts of life. I wasn’t able to remember them really though, except for why wedding rings are worn on the third finger (because ancient people believed a nerve directly linked this finger to the heart and putting a ring will stop the contents of the heart from escaping…see, I remember!). I recalled such since it was the last thing I read, because thankfully my sweetest friend was ready to go.

But most thankfully, there were magazines to save my sanity from a lengthy wait! Thanks magazines!

I was skimming through the previous posts in Wikimusicguide blog when I spotted World music articles like Bossanova in Brazil and Reggae in the Carribean. In the reggae article, there I wrote: During my flights of imagination, I get to daydream a Carribean spree. From its rich art and culture, to its famous resort spots due to its mild tropical climate, the Carribean is a renowned place of beauty. Of course, not to mention is its wonderful music. When it comes to Worldbeat, the genre of world popular music, Carribean has one of the most influential kinds.

Yes, the Carribean is really one of my desired travel destinations, besides Brazil, Scandinavia and some others (on second thought, plenty others). The tropical beauty of the islands in the Carribean like the Bahamas and countries in it like the Latin Americas are just endearing. Carribean also include US Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands, so there are so many places to see and explore! And guess what, there’s a travel magazine that especially covers everything about traveling the Carribean. I got pretty excited when I found it out in the magazine directory. Carribean Travel and Life Magazine has it, all the info you need to know if you want to get there!

When it comes to culture, one of the places that I am most fascinated with is the rich culture of the Carribean. They’ve got everything—the sceneries, travel spots and destinations, the food, the people, and the music (love it!). Just looking at pictures of the natural spots of the islands is already appealing, what more being in the actual place! The magazine indeed would be a great help for people aiming to have a vacation or trip to the place. At least if I’m far from actually traveling there at the moment, there’s a magazine that can take me there!

I used to hang out with a lot of musicians and band experts, from guitar geniuses to bass buffs, drum geeks, percussion people, and the rest. They of course have a unifying characteristic, that is, talent. Most of them did not even have formal lessons, they just tinkered on these stuff and whoalla, and they got the whole thing already. They’d do a lot of listening, and are engulfed with passion for music and for their chosen instrument. Though some are really just plain gifted, shifting positions from guitarist to bassist, drummer to the one banging the bongos.

Surely, they do get for themselves printed materials created especially for them, instrument players. Technically speaking, they are knowledgeable through guides, books and magazines. That’s what separates them, real musicians, to hobbyists, and to those who are just listeners and followers. Besides music players and CDs, you’d find adaptors, pedals, and copies of Bass Player, Guitar Player or Guitar World magazines inside their backpacks. 

Speaking of such magazines, they’ve been very helpful to these serious musicians since they offer serious stuff too. Guitar Player Magazine, for one, features vital information for guitar players who are after honing their skills and their craft. It provides knowledge about playing guitar in a range of genres, about known guitar players and available guitar equipments and paraphernalia. Bass Player Magazine also highlights items about playing techniques and the know-how of bass playing, from reviews of various materials to exclusive tutorials from renowned players, and columns on instrument upkeep and repairs.

Guitar World publications offer Acoustic and Bass magazines for acoustic guitarists and bass players. Guitar World Acoustic provides lessons on acoustic guitar playing, reviews on the acoustic kits and many others. Guitar World Bass Magazine likewise features interviews of recognized bass players, reviews and a lot more.

Besides the gifts and the instruments they carry, musicians unite with the materials they get themselves up to date and informed too, such as these mags!

 Back in college, I was an extreme rock fan. I listen to all sorts and subgenres, from hardcore to softcore, alternative to progressive, punk to emo, ET cetera. Those were the days of frequenting concerts and rock hubs, amassing albums and EPs of indie rockers, collecting gig knick knacks like fancy tickets and artsy freebies.

 It was also the time of regular visits to the nearest Tower Records, checking out CDs until sometime later I get to buy a piece or two after hours of scouring. That is of course combing stacks of almost all genres, with rock and pop (since they were always grouped together) taking the longest time. In retrospect, those were the days when online music shops and peer to peer file sharing were just beginning to bud, and iTunes was still nonexistent.  

 Of course, magazines were part of the rock fondness routine. Whenever I go to bargain basement priced bookstores of the shopping center around our campus, I get to scan tons of back issues of music magazines of different kinds, and get to purchase one mag along with a children’s book I usually buy. There were magazines about rock music and the whole culture, including music news, reviews and interviews, album releases, and other hot topics to boot. There were magazines for the contemporary rock sound with inside focus of rock bands and musicians, artist features, current rock trends, newcomers, new songs and videos, and everything fresh from the scene. They also have magazine photos of all sorts from various rock groups, including exclusive photos, snapshots and stolen shots, from formal to casual goings-on like during interviews and music awards, during practice hours, pre and post onstage performances, and more. They also have photos from serious to offhand band bustles like them signing records deals and autographing albums, them inside tour buses and hotel rooms, and more as well. The most frequent on their stands were Alternative Press Magazine and Spin Magazine. I could even remember Michael Stipe’s bald head in one of Spin’s covers on the bookstore window.
 
 Yes, those were to days, the days edged to the rock side.

We are a family of dog lovers. At one point, we had ten dogs taken care of all at one time. Now we decided to limit them to three, because apparently the budget can’t afford a population of ten gluttonous pets plus six humans in the house. Presently, we have a playful, sometimes mischievous Dalmatian, a motherly, protective Doberman, and a brave, brutish mixed breed of Rotweiller and Doberman.

Dogs are branded as man’s best friend, because of the loyalty, attachment and affection they form with their owners. Owning dogs is not just THE act of owning one. It consists of tender love and care. They need to be fed well, bathed well, and groomed well. They need to take their shots too, and have visits to the vet.

More than newspapers having a weekly section on pets and animal living, websites offering pet advices and more, there are also a number of magazines for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and the like.

There’s Dog Fancy Magazine, a monthly publication for dog owners which offers pieces of writing that deal with care and nurture of pet dogs, and more. They have articles about dog nutrition, dog behavior, dog health, and dog breeding. The magazine also has featured breeds each month from the number of breeds existing in a dog’s taxonomic group.

Dog World Magazine is another publication from the publishers of Dog Fancy Magazine. It is issued monthly as well, and is dedicated for dog breeders, exhibitors, hobbyists, professionals in kennel operations, groomers, veterinarians, animal hospital and clinic owners, and pet supply outlet proprietors. If Dog Fancy Magazine is more for regular dog owners, Dog World Magazine alternatively has topics which are fashioned for dog specialists and experts.

Then there’s Dogs in Review as well, which fits more like a journal for dog show professionals. It has comprehensive articles about different dog shows and presentations.

There’s this new craze in the field of puzzles and games of logic, which comes in the name Sudoku. The game, meaning “single digits” is a number placement puzzle based on logic. There is a partly complete 9×9 grid and the player’s aim is to fill that grid wherein each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 blocks or regions will include the digits from 1 to 9.

The game became an international hit in 2005, and has been entertaining people around the world since then. Dell Magazine originated the game, calling it Number Place. The game eventually became popular in Japan and thus given the name Sudoku.

I love doing crossword puzzles. These magazines also talks about current developments in medical cases in children and infants like the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome of SIDS, or developmental disabilities like autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, and learning disabilities. They provide important details to bring awareness to parents about such cases. They also provide success stories of miracle children, true stories of coping and healing, and other inspirational tales of parents.

There are fun parts too! Like funny family stories, dads talking about their children, moms discussing their kids, shopping tips of different baby products, movie reviews for the whole family, and topics discussed in the children’s own point of view like the best pet they have, and other subjects through the eyes of a child.

I’ve been an art fan ever since. Only that—a fan. I did not acquire my mother’s art expertise. Instead, I grew up inept at color combinations, have screwed sketching skills, and among the multiple intelligences, visual-spatial apparently is not my intelligence. So instead, I get to hang with photography, basic black & whites to trial & errors until I feel I’ve captured nature’s beautiful art from The Creator himself. And pray I’ll end up getting an artist for a husband to at least have my children get the genes, haha. I always enjoy traditional aesthetics, and elements of fine art. In school where I teach, we have art books for our young children, and I am among the children who enjoy the books so much. As a teacher of these children with developmental disabilities, one requisite trait is creativity. Besides great patience and persistence, creativity is every teacher’s virtue. From managing to make activities more learning-friendly by incorporating art and creativity, to being holistic by using visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile cues, these art books and other art reading materials help a lot.

We have students whom we teach vocational skills and art instead of traditional academics, and these skills develop their talents in other areas despite the disability. Art include decorative arts and crafts, and of course dance and music, where we have a bunch who enjoys dance and music very much.

That’s why art magazines are very helpful to teachers, be it regular classes or special classes, in helping shape the skills of their students. Creative works hone the gifts of these children, and produce striking pieces we adults even get amazed. There are a lot of art magazines out there, art magazines particularly for teachers. There is a publication in the magazine subscriptions, Art and Activities Magazine, which provide articles to help teachers at all grade levels, prepare daily classroom art projects for their classes. That is indeed one great help for us teachers.

I watched a few days ago my best-liked romantic flick Two Weeks Notice, with starrers Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock (best-liked actress as well (: ). Grant is George Wade, the super rich, powerful front liner of their family’s Wade Corporation. He’s influential, famous, and of course, an eligible bachelor. There’s this one scene where he attends a medical charity event and was asked by a doctor if he could sign her GQ. He paused for a while, thinking it was some kind of a medical term. GQ is of course the men’s magazine where he was in the front cover.

Then I wondered, what does GQ mean? Every magazine reader certainly knows GQ magazine, since it’s the most famous top selling men’s magazine there is. Gorgeousness Quotient perhaps? Gentlemen Quality maybe? I had to found out.

GQ is actually originally called Gentlemen’s Quarterly (Gentlemen Quality was close enough..). It’s a magazine all for the male pack, which handles topics essential about men— from men’s style, fashion and culture, movies, music, sports, technology, women, health & fitness, travel, and a lot more. And get this, GQ is in circulation for almost 50 years. It began as a fashion quarterly until it reached broader subject matters for men, to what it is today. It has graced famous men (and women) on its covers, like big shot public figures from actors, athletes, models, business and political icons. There were Orlando Bloom, Russel Crowe, Johnny Depp, Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Clive Owen, Victoria’s Secret Models to name a few.

Since GQ began as a fashion quarterly, it has expert style segments which talks about fashion rules for men, how to’s like how to buy the ideal business wardrobe; lists like the top shops to buy from, top suits or shoes; style secrets, commandments of style and GQ endorses, which are ultimate fashion recommendations. These and a lot more themes, no wonder it’s the top selling men’s magazine.

If you are a fashionista, then it’s certain that fashion magazines will never be absent in your baggage. Whether you are in Milan, Paris, London, New York, or Tokyo, a fashion mag gets you updated to the latest fashion trends around the world. It is the survival guide for fashion aficionados and gurus alike.

A fashion mag carries valuable pieces of fashion info–from the current couture, WHO’s IN in the designers’ department, what are the hottest brands in the market, and what’s the IN style for the season. But that’s not all. It includes tips and how to’s as well, in make-ups, get-ups and anything under the fashion sun. Grabbing your favorite celebrity magazine, you see the cover photo of the most talked-about couple in Hollywood basking in a private island in their private vacation. Inside, you stare at your best-liked stars on the red carpet, striking their unrehearsed poses. Paparazzi is an Italian term for photographers who shoot candid pictures of celebrities, often by deliberately chasing them in their public and personal activities. Paparazzi can be both a friend and a foe to celebrities–friend by continually putting them in pages of glitzy show business magazines thus adding to their visibility, foe by incessantly haunting them to the point of losing their personal privacies. Oftentimes as well, paparazzi carry a negative connotation, especially to those celebrities that are constantly badgered by such photographers. One known incident about this paparazzi conduct was the death of Princess Diana in 1997 in a high-speed car accident in Paris, France.

I read in a trivia that paparazzi became popular from the movie ‘La Dolce Vita’ where a news photographer in the film was surnamed Paparazzo (singular for paparazzi). It also stated that paparazzo is actually an Italian dialect word for a certain noisy mosquito. Ah, so there’s the association.

How then does being paparazzi become a lucrative job? These photographers, the paparazzi, sell their photos to a lot of magazines and newspapers. These magazines and newspapers then publish such photographs, where we all know that the most in demand celebrities are the greatest buzz makers, and the publications that feature the most in demand celebrities would certainly sell like hot potatoes. There’s how the paparazzi earn their big money, from the precious photos they take. Take Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Shiloh Nouviel for example, where magazines paid millions for a single picture of the most famous celebrity baby.

To simply put, stars aren’t alive without the paparazzi. Magazines wouldn’t sell without the paparazzi. Boon or bane, it’s part of celebrity business.

One of the most informative magazines I have encountered is a my father’s collection of Reader’s Digest. From inspirational stories to life changing issues it combines topics about wisdom, health, entertainment, insights and humor. The topic that I like most in Reader’s Digest is their True Stories. It is very inspiring and the stories are very touching and there are some that you can really relate to. I read a very touching story about miracles in a December issue. Five real-life stories compiled in one article about sharing, helping one another, remembering and even miracles after the hurricane Katrina. I love this part of the story about angles in different forms: “Angels come in all shapes, sizes and costumes. And all of them bring little miracles with them, prompting others to pass them along.” I believe it’s true. I think they really do.

Aside from life changing stories, they also feature humor pages. So it’s not all serious. A dose of laughter isn’t bad. Do you know that aside from the change in voice is a tip that a person is lying, paying attention to a person’s speech rate and breathing pattern are also signals? Now you can spot a liar! Now, cool gadgets just don’t call themselves cool for no reason, right? So how would you know if this certain gadget is what you really need? My advice… read the product reviews. With all that eyel-catching images, and featured articles that would make cool gear lovers drool, this gizmo-packed magazine sells for $144. It is probably the most expensive magazine you’ll find on the rack of your fave mag store in your neighborhood. Mind you, T3 is not all about gears alone, but girls too. All in all, T3 magazine is a sure hit for a caliente hombre of the modern times.

When I was a little kid, I used to admire my elder sister’s collection of sketches and drawings of different images, mostly humans, because I don’t know, maybe she’s fascinated with the beauty of human anatomy of something, the curves and all that. Seen on almost everywhere, but most of them, she found on magazines. She likes fictional characters, especially odd, so she would grab a pencil (sometimes pen), and scribbles her way to its completion. And when it’s done, I can’t help but to stare at it and wishes to draw like her. “Man, she’s good!”, i used to think.

And when she’s really at it, she would put finishing touches, like grabbing markers or pastel colors, or water colors, whatever her crafty hands hover on, she would use it. She would put them all together in her thick brown envelope and keep in her drawer, a collection sort of stuff.

Until I had this comic magazine which a friend gave me, and was sold then I believe about $1.30 or so. Can’t really remember what magazine that was, but I’m pretty sure it was a DC, where you would see Dark Wing and Midnight fight. Sure is a treasure for 7-year old art fanatic. And so I would read it so often that I remembered every single line. So I thought cool graphics and all, and since my family is in fond of drawing/sketching and everything, like I’ve seen my father draw images of his plumbing projects, like those you see on a blue print ala Leonardo Da Vinci, my sisters who did my school projects so cartoony, and my brothers did drawings similar to that of my father, only better, I thought I’m gonna give it a shot.

It’s kind of hard that it required patience and huge percent of passion (for a kid) to produce images like those, with all the shadowing stuff, the fluidity of the movement that looked so natural (which made me once think that maybe STAN LEE is a god in disguise), the reaction of clothes and how they react to the movement of the character wearing it (although most of them wears spandex, you know, the usual superhero stuff), above many that some, I don’t have an idea what to call them. Though if you’re in this field, I bet you know what I’m pertaining to.

It didn’t come out satisfying enough because they had small heads and large bodies, but I sure was proud to discover the blood runs through the veins. I kept in mind it’ll get better eventually, and of course it did.

So you never really know what big things might come from small ones. And you know, I still have that inspiration mag, or so I think… (now where did I keep it?)

Boredom kills. Right. Especially when we’re at home alone or maybe in an establishment, waiting for someone in the lobby of a hotel, or being the next patient at a dentist clinic, we seek for something to kill time. Sure, we have internet, television, radio, even cellphones have taken a huge leap in technology that it now have quite numerous features to keep you occupied, among a lot. Yup, magazines still got the charm.

Almost everything under the stars, you can find them in magazines. Topics, features, and articles about things around you, it’s there. It is unbelievably broad, that I think you’d agree when I say there isn’t any topic that hasn’t been discussed. Broad that it is impossible to enumerate all the things you can see and read in it. Round of applause to the publishers of magazines.

What I find fun to read are the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) topics (that, of course, comes after computers, gadgets, and automobile), which are usually found on magazines that are about hobbies, or home improvement. As a homebody type of person, I find them educating, and interesting that you never would know that you are capable of doing something unless you’ve tried it, right?
So DIYs… although there are topics that I find too easy to do, like HOW TOs, directions on how to repair this and that, that the question, “how dummy could a person be to ask for step by step procedures like this when they should have figured out how to fix things up themselves?”, crosses your mind (quite funny but not to laugh at, I think the editors have their reasons), I find most of them challenging, that you know it took a lot of creativity to come up with an idea like that. Making chandelier from scrap, chairs and tables with the 60′s character, or a work of art from spoons and forks. Wouldn’t you be impressed?

And what better time to read them? I, personally prefer reading them during lazy afternoons, or at bedtime. When you’re done with the day’s work, done with the chores, and ready to call it a night.

I love magazines. I love reading them. I find it interesting at some level because it provides me general information about many things like fashion, makeup, showbusiness, hobbies, and general topics. Depending on the magazine, some offer articles that discuss human interest, true- to-life stories, heroic acts, inspiring stories of other people who managed to the impossible. I particularly like magazines that offer unique topics like the latest diet, stories about the other woman or mistresses, how to be a lover to your husband, and the like.

There are many magazines out in the market. It offers different approach and caters to different target markets. Some magazine are for teenagers so this kind of magazine offers topics that will catch the interest of teenagers like music trends, young teen idols, fashion, puppy love, schools, parents, et cetera. Majority of the magazines out in the market are woman’s magazine. Every magazine focuses on different genre of topics. Some focus on fashion while others are on parenting and housekeeping. If there are female magazines, of course there are male magazines. Depending on the type of the magazine, it usually offers male fashion and male icons like models and actors and well, of course, woman, which I think is inevitable.

Business magazines are also on the rise. This kind of magazine offers the current trends in the business trend in specific country and industry. It is very informative and very objective when it comes to giving the facts about specific industryt.

Aside from the types that I mentioned above, there are various magazines that offers other types of information. There are some that are focus on specific topics like gardening, computers, digital gadget, sports, music and the like.

In conclusion, magazines are a nice way to get information while relaxing. It offers a variety of things and with it colorful background and layouts, it is an entertainment package in itself.
