Kids Discover Magazine

Beginning in the late 18th century, illustrated books were joined by the illustrated periodical, which flourished thereafter. Fiction had been illustrated almost from its beginnings, and by the 19th century the practice had grown so that few novels were issued without at least a frontispiece (an illustration facing or preceding the title page in a book), often in color. The illustration of topographical, architectural, and botanical works also proliferated in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the practice of illustrating adult fiction declined. Illustration of books for adults came to be confined principally to nonfiction, with emphasis on illustrations as learning tools, especially in textbooks and other reference books. The illustration of children's literature, however, began to be increasingly common in the 19th century, and after the middle of the 20th century it accounted for the greater part of all book illustration. Periodicals came to rely heavily on photographic illustration.

Children learned work skills by helping their parents. Some children learned reading, writing, and math at home. Not many children went to school. For example, most parents believed that schooling wasn't important for girls, and there was greater need for their help at home. Education was most emphasized and many believed that all people should know how to read so they could study the Bible. New England governments required towns to pay for a one-room school where children were taught. Younger children might learn basic lessons at a neighboring lady's house, called a Dame School.

Of all thecolonies, Southern families placed the least importance on education. Wealthy parents hired tutors to teach their children. Some sent their sons to European schools. Many children of poorer families began working in the fields at a young age and didn't have much schooling.

Before many people could read, art instructed and educated. For example, stained glass windows in churches were meant to teach people stories in the Bible. Many paintings from the past show religious scenes.

Learning and remembering are connected. The trick to remembering something is learning it well in the first place. That way, you can store what you've learned in your long-term memory.

One way to improve your memory of something is by using a mnemonic device. A mnemonic device puts information into a form that's easy to remember. For example, students sometimes memorize the Great Lakes with the word homes. It stands for Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

This journal named, Kids Discover Magazine, will help all children out there have fun while learning a lot. Information and knowledge comes in very delightful appeal that children will definitely be attracted at. Activities are also provided to enhance further their talents and hidden skills. So grab a copy now and have a great time learning together with your kids.
