Description The nation's first consumer and lifestyle magazine for people with Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder and an important resource for parents and teachers meeting the challenges of this disability.ADDitude Magazine ADDitude Magazine provides the A to Z of ADD/ADHD—symptoms in children and in adults, living with individuals with ADHD, treatment, and potential disabilities among others, an up-to-date database of what to do and what not to do with children and adults potentially suffering from this disorder. ADD/ADHD is a debilitating disorder that warrants treatment which can be achieved not only through appropriate medical and psychiatric attention; moreover, it is a disorder that should not be faced alone, both by the individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and their caregivers. ADDitude Magazine provides an avenue for people having this same problem to have a platform to be able to exchange their views and opinions, their suggestions and recommendations and how they are coping with the disorder creating a community for the misunderstood, breakthroughs on the disorder and potential ways to win the war against ADD/ADHD. ADD/ADHD is a disorder, not a disease. It is not contagious and it can be controlled. Where treatments are available, having to know the facts, understanding what it is and knowing how to live with it through constant updates may well be a move towards eradicating the disorder as a problem. Most times, a cure is not the answer to living with ADD/ADHD; it is in the fact that we can divert these symptoms into more productive actions that makes ADD/ADHD a controlled clinical incidence. ADDitude Magazine gives you what is to be your positive ATTITUDE towards ADD/ADHD. Attitude on ADD/ADHD When a child loses his focus on any given task, parents and guardians take away what are precious to the child to help him focus. When a child exhibits inattention, they are said to be awkward and strange, when they are hyperactive and cannot concentrate and do not listen to instruction, they are called slow learners. When a child is impulsive, they are called careless and clumsy. But is there more to the low grades, disinterest with work, inability to concentrate and impulsiveness? ADD-Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD-Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder was first illustrated by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845, however it was in 1902 when Sir George F. Still published a series of lectures to the Royal College of Physicians in England describing a group of impulsive children with significant behavioral problems caused by a genetic dysfunction and not by poor child rearing; over time, countless scientific papers on the disorder have been published providing information on its nature, course, causes, impairments and treatments. When a child exhibits inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, the unsuspecting parent or guardian may only see these as behaviors, not as symptoms, albeit brands the child as 'bad boy' or 'bad girl' or may just simply think that this is a discipline problem. However, inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are the principal characteristics of ADD/ ADHD and as such deserve special attention—medical and psychiatric attention! But one may argue, all children may become inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive at any given situation, so when does one know it is ADD? The year 2000 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) provides the criteria for diagnosing ADD/ADHD. While it is true that ADD/ADHD is prevalent in children, there have been documented cases in adults, thus deserving more effort to disseminate information on this potentially debilitating disorder.
