There have been many tear-jerker movies and television shows about man's relationship with these four-legged barking extended family members. Lassie, Boomer, Benjie and Bingo are just a few of those dogs that we have adored as kids because of their intelligence and just because they are cute. We have also seen and heard about real-life situations where dogs have saved humans from imminent danger. Dogs have indeed made their mark in man's life. And yet there is so much to know about these cuddly pawed creatures, and dogs too have a thing or two to teach humans. There exists a two-way relationship between man and dogs. Scientifically, dogs are domesticated subspecies of the gray wolf. They are warm-blooded animals and at the moment, there are over 800 dog breeds recognized by kennels worldwide. Mixed breeds are mongrels or mutts. Regardless of these facts, to a dog lover, a canine is a dog as long as it yelps and barks, wags its tail, whimpers and yes, listens, and loves without condition his Master. However, what makes dogs very special is their keen intelligence. They can be trained to do tasks that do not only entertain, but benefit humans as well. Dogs are social creatures, which is probably why they can be trained, why they are playful and why they have the ability to find their place in human households and can react and adapt to social situations—and all for what, a handful of treats, a hug and a little bit of loving. However, let us not forget that dogs are still predators, so it is wise to know and educate ourselves to protect us from dogs and for the dog's protection against human ignorance and 'animalistic behaviors.' So see, like human relationships, the man-dog relationship too has its ups and downs.
